Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is typically associated with teenagers, however you can form adult acne. Acne can run in families. Acne develops within hair follicles, within every hair follicle is a sebaceous gland which is responsible for producing sebum, which lubricates the hair and skin.

The sebaceous gland is sensitive to hormonal changes, especially the hormone testosterone. Testosterone causes an overproduction of sebum which mixes with dead skin cells on the skin and causes the hair follicle to become blocked and bacteria to form. A main contributing hormone is DHT (Dihydrotestosterone), DHT is triggered by stress, anxiety and depression.

There are three stages of acne, mild, moderate and severe.

Mild is associated with oily skin, comedones(white heads and Black heads) and redness
Moderate is Associated with oily skin, comedones, pustules, papules, redness and can be painful. (Pustules and papules are hard red lumps containing pus or fluid.
Severe is associated with very oily skin, large papules, pustules, cysts and nodular cystictic. These can be very painful. Scarring is common with severe acne.
